FALL PORTRAITS: BEST OUTDOOR LOCATIONS IN KANSAS CITY
Fall is in full swing here in Kansas City!
The weather is cooler, the leaves are changing, and daylight savings is ruining naps for all. (oh, that's just me? Oops lol)
I have compiled a list of my top ten favorite locations in the kc metro for portrait sessions. Whether you're hiring a photographer or tackling them yourself, these spots are sure to provide a beautiful backdrop for holiday photos!
TEN OF THE BEST PHOTOGRAPHY LOCATIONS IN KANSAS CITY
1. SHAWNEE MISSION PARK (LENEXA, KANSAS):
This location provides a mixture of beautiful lakes, tall trees, and lots of wide open spaces. It includes fields of tall grass and a popular "island" spot near one of the shelters.
2. ANTIOCH PARK (OVERLAND PARK, KANSAS):
Various bridges, a small pond, trees, and a walking path make Antioch Park a great place for portraits. With a central location it's among one of the more popular parks in the area. Mom tip: keep your kids from seeing the playground before photos and park at the 67th street entrance or the Rose Garden to find a photo spot.
3. ERNIE MILLER NATURE CENTER (OLATHE, KANSAS):
One of my personal favorites, Ernie Miller provides a deep woods feel without ever leaving Johnson County. Hiking trails, benches, beautiful tree cover, and bridges create the perfect environment for portraits.
4. JACOB LOOSE MEMORIAL PARK (KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI):
Loose Park is amazing for photos with huge colorful trees of all types! Walking through the park you'll see at least 4 different species of trees. (I'm obsessed with trees..for real.) There is a very popular bridge as well as lots of open spaces that provide a great backdrop! If you love colorful leaves, this is the place for you.
5. BURR OAK WOODS NATURE CONSERVATION CENTER (BLUE SPRINGS, MISSOURI):
Speaking of trees, this place is FULL of them. There are several amazing spots with rows of tall and beautiful pines and walking trails all over the place! Also, this area is HUGE so it's a good idea to scope out a spot before you grab the family for photos.
6. NELSON-ATKINS MUSEUM OF ART (KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI):
Nelson Atkins is great for those who desire a more modern feel mixed with the outdoors. The vast lawn surrounded by rows of trees and decorated with several shuttlecocks accommodate anyone looking for that true Kansas City vibe. The beautiful steps leading up to the museum are among one of my favorite locations for portraits! *It should be noted that photography is not allowed within the museum itself*
7. KAUFFMAN CENTER FOR THE PERFORMING ARTS (KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI):
The outside of this building is amazing and very unique! It boasts lots of beautiful, clean lines as well as an amazing backdrop of Kansas City. This location is for those looking for a very modern feel while still being outdoors. Photography at Kauffman does require a permit, which can be found here.
8. HISTORIC WEST BOTTOMS (KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI):
The West Bottoms is an industrial area near downtown Kansas City. It is one of the oldest areas of the city and is among one of the more popular spots among photographers. This location includes tons of brick, graffiti, and has a more "edgy" vibe.
9. CROWN CENTER (KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI):
Crown Center has a little bit of everything, an ice skating rink, fountains, and beautiful lights and decorations for the holiday season. The Link, a walkway connecting The Westin to Crown Center and Union Station, is also a great spot for photos and is weather protected- bye bye cold!
10. YOUR HOME (COMFORTSVILLE, USA):
Nothing is as "you" as your home. Children are comfortable in their own homes and BONUS- you can wear your pj's if you want to. In-home sessions are great for capturing the more subtle, but amazing moments that surround the holidays. Imagine a laid back session with your family baking and decorating cookies, reading stories to your children, and decorating the Christmas tree! Don't forget that memories can be made anywhere and you don't have to go far to get a photo you'll want to keep forever.
